As a Redmond dentist, we are often asked by patients what they can do to improve their oral health at home. In addition to brushing, flossing, and using an antiseptic mouth rinse, it often comes down to what you put inside your mouth every time you take a bite or get something to drink. The choices that you make from a dietary perspective greatly influence the health of your teeth and gums because your food and drink enter the body through your mouth.

This makes it important to understand what food and drinks can benefit the health of your teeth and which ones are more likely to lead to dental erosion, decay, or things like gum disease. Here is a list of our do's and don'ts from our Redmond dentist office so that you can make healthy decisions.

Do eat a well-balanced diet that contains lean protein, green leafy vegetables, crunchy vegetables, nuts and dairy products.

This type of diet is good for your overall health because it is most likely to provide you with the vitamins and nutrients you need to function physically and to have a strong immune system. Simultaneously, this diet can actually help to strengthen your teeth by remineralizing them. This process combats natural erosion.

Don’t eat too much citrus.

While lemons, limes, and oranges, taste delicious and are full of important vitamin C, they are also highly acidic. Acid is terrible for your teeth because it can directly erode the enamel on them. Your teeth only have a set amount of enamel and if you erode it, the dentin underneath can become exposed and you will begin to experience tooth sensitivity. Your teeth can also become brittle as a result and will be more likely to become damaged.

Do drink milk.

Your teeth need calcium in order to be strong and so does your jawbone. If you drink milk and eat other dairy products you will be getting calcium. If you are lactose intolerant, you can also get this from green leafy vegetables like spinach. The thing to remember is to avoid any dairy products that have added sugar since the sugar is bad for your teeth.

Don’t drink soda.

The absolute worst thing that you can do for your teeth is drink soda. All types of soda, even diet ones, are bad for your teeth because they are highly acidic with a low pH level. In fact, soda has a pH level that is closer to the conditions in battery acid than it is to water. By simply drinking a glass of soda every day, you can cause the enamel on your teeth to erode to the point that your teeth are likely to become damaged and will certainly become sensitive with time.

Do drink more water.

One of the best things you can do for your oral health is to drink more water. If you drink a lot of water, the water will help to wash away food and bacteria from your teeth before plaque can form. This will also help your breath to stay fresh and it will help your overall health by keeping you hydrated.
