Crises in Nepal

NEPALTears filled her big chocolate brown eyes, as the small girl walked alone along the street of her earthquake ravaged village. In bare feet, she tread the uncertain ground beneath her, clothed only in underwear, her face and body covered in dust, her belly empty of food, and her heart scorched from the loss of her family and home. Her name is Maya, and this is how they found the helpless 4-year old girl, one of so many others like her, as a result of the tragic misfortune that visited Nepal in a series of earthquakes and relentless aftershocks.

Two trucks carrying supplies of food, water, tents and blankets swept the area to bring what relief they could when they found Maya in a state of shock from which she could barely speak, as tears streamed down her face in answer to the question, “Where are your parents?” In a Nepali gesture of sticking her tongue out through her teeth, she indicated that they were dead. The volunteer workers fed small Maya, bathed her and gave her some clothes.

The 7 Summits Foundation (, led by AC Sherpa, is a volunteer group who have been working tirelessly to bring help and support to Nepal which has suffered destruction on a scale which seems unimaginable, but to those living there, the hardship is overwhelming. An earthquake of 7.8 magnitude on April 25, 2015 was followed by another earthquake of 7.3 magnitude on May 12, 2015. Multiple aftershocks averaging 4 to 5 per day continue to torment the people of Nepal, totaling over 1,000 aftershocks, as they live among the rubble of what was once their homes and sanctuaries, wearing the same dirt and blood-stained clothing they did the day they lost everything.

Nepal now has 1.8 million displaced people as a result of the destruction of their residential homes. There have been over 10,000 deaths, 21,445 injured and 375 people missing. Following the earthquakes, 49 people were killed in landslides and wind flurries so powerful as to lift moving vehicles off of the ground. They have lost 8,000 schools to this catastrophic misfortune, and they are living in tents. These people are in survival mode, and their primary concern is simply to shelter themselves from rain, put food in their bellies and learn the whereabouts of their missing family members.

Having recently returned from Nepal, AC Sherpa is currently organizing another volunteer mission to leave on September 26th, 2015. Their focus will be on rebuilding schools and a health clinic, and the 7 Summits Foundation is looking for both volunteers and donations for these efforts.

• To donate and/or volunteer, please visit their website at: and go to “Donations” or “Volunteer” in the upper right corner.
The 7 Summits Foundation is a 501C3 recognized non-profit with the IRS, so donations are tax deductible.

The goal of the 7 Summits Foundation is to build 10 schools and 1 medical clinic, for which they will collect a 100% government match on donations for each structure.
